Frequently asked questions
Short answers about Oikogen, the private family tree app.
Is Oikogen free?
Yes, Oikogen is free while it's in beta. There's no credit card needed and no account to create.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There's no sign-up, email or password. You open the app and start telling it about your family.
Where is my family data stored?
In your web browser, on the device you're using. Your family data never leaves your device, and we never receive it.
Where does Oikogen get its information?
From you and your family. It organises what you tell it into a family tree and keeps track of where each fact came from.
Which devices does it work on?
Chrome on a computer, and Safari on iPhone with iOS 26 or later. We've tested it with Chrome on a Mac and on an iPhone 14 Pro. Other browsers that support WebGPU may work, but we haven't tested them yet. Phones and tablets use a smaller AI model that makes more mistakes, so check each card before saving.
How big is the download?
The first time you open the app, your browser downloads the AI model once: about 1 GB on a computer and about 300 MB on a phone or tablet. Voice input adds a one-time download the first time you use the microphone: about 240 MB on a computer and 110 MB on a phone. After that it starts from your browser's storage.
Can I talk to it instead of typing?
Yes. Tap the microphone and speak. Your voice is turned into text on your device, and you can fix any names before sending.
How accurate is it?
It's good at everyday family stories, but it does make mistakes, especially the smaller phone model. That's why every message becomes a card you check, and nothing from it goes into your family until you save it.
Can I share my family tree with relatives?
Yes. Export a file and send it to them. When they import it, they choose who's who before anything merges, and a restore point lets them go back. There's no live syncing between devices yet.
Can I use my tree in other genealogy software?
Yes. Download it as a GEDCOM file, the standard format most genealogy software reads.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Your tree is deleted from that browser, because it's only stored there. Export a copy regularly and keep it somewhere safe.
